  14. Shareware is a marketing concept whereby users can fully test and evaluate

  33. Upgrading Convert from 1.x
  34. --------------------------

  36. If you use Convert 1.x and haven't made any changes to the supplied data
  37. files, you can just delete the old Convert files and start fresh.  Convert
  38. 1.0 also required a small section in the WIN.INI file (called [CONVERT]
  39. appropriately enough) which you may now delete.

  41. If you DID make changes to the default data files, your modified files
  42. will still work with 2.0.  The only change in the supplied data files from
  43. 1.0 is the addition of temperature to the units.dat and cats.dat files so
  44. merging your modified files with the 2.0 supplied files is easy.

  46. Installing Convert
  47. ------------------

  51. Note:  If you obtained Convert in archived form from a bulletin board or
  52. vendor, your first step should be to extract the contents of the archive
  53. to a temporary directory.

  56. Choice 1: Use the Install Program.
  57.  
  58. This is really the easiest option.  Like many Windows programs,
  59. Convert uses a variety of files such as Dynamic Link Libraries which
  60. either must or should be in specific locations of your disk for most
  61. efficient operation.  The Install program automates the whole process.
  62.  
  63. In case you're concerned that the Install program will make unwelcome and
  64. unsolicited changes to your WIN.INI file or to files shared with other
  65. programs, you needen't be.  Convert uses its own INI file (CONVERT.INI)
  66. and prompts you before overwriting any Dynamic Link Libraries in the
  67. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  Generally you should allow the installation
  68. program to overwrite older files, but it's your choice.

  71. Choice 2: Manual Install.
  72.  
  73. The following files are required to run Convert.  The directories in which
  74. they should reside are also given.  \CONVERT is used as an example.  Any
  75. subdirectory name can be used.

  84. Data files can actually be placed anywhere but Convert won't be able
  85. to find them if they're not in the default location until you specify
  86. a new location using Convert's Toolbox.

  93. The above DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files must first be unpacked using
  94. the supplied DUNPACK utility.  While these DLL's may reside in the same
  95. directory as the Convert program, it is generally more efficient to put
  96. them in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory where they may be shared with other
  97. programs.

  99. If you're doing a manual install, you should make certain you don't
  100. overwrite newer copies of these files.  The automatic install program
  101. checks for you.

  105. The installation program creates this for you.  If you're doing it on your
  106. own, however, a default INI file is supplied.

  109. Known Problems
  110. --------------
  111.  
  112. An incompatibility in the Turbo Power Data Entry Workshop library has
  113. been observed with certain video drivers, possibly in conjunction with an
  114. older version of Adobe Type Manager.  The symptom is that Convert will
  115. fail with a "Kernel not present error."  There is no current fix or
  116. workaround for this problem but I will issue a revision if a future update
  117. to the Turbo Power libraries addresses this incompatibility.
